St Brigids 4-9 Glenravel 2-11  - All County Minor League

Whether still dining out on the result from the previous week, or looking forward to the 1/4 final match next week this encounter probably did little for either team, and would have provided little insight to the watching Lamh Dhearg contingent.Glenravel started brightly with points from Caolan McCambridge(2) and Sean McKillop, however the game was all square by the 10th minute. Once again free-taking and missed opportunities was our downfall, allowing St Brigid's to build confidence with two majors in the 23rd and 24th minutes of the half. Still a McCambridge goal and Declan Diamond free left just a goal in it at the break, 2-5 to 1-5. Glenravel started brightly again in the second half, a David Higgins free and Declan Higgins point after hard yards had been made by Christy O'Kane in the middle of the park. Still it was too easy for the City men to get in for the killer goals and despite a Josh Quinn goal and late points from Declan Higgins, McKillop and McCambridge, St Brigids ran out winners by a four point margin.

Glenravel 3-10 Rasharkin 1-8

On the 4th May 2010 this year Rasharkin amassed a staggering 3-21 against the Con Magees, albeit conceding 5-7 in the process. At the time this scribe contended that the result could be overturned come championship time. Having won their last two league fixtures at home in unconvincing style against Aghagallon and Dunloy and been inactive on the field of play for about six weeks, their was little evidence to show just how such a turnaround was to come about. Still on a resplendent Maginn Park on a sun-drenched evening their was a quiet steely determination about the men in Green&White who took to the field, and although still not at full strength, were buoyed by the inclusion of a number of the U16 squad. Rasharkin's intentions were obvious from the start, arriving an hour before throw-in and par-taking in a rigorous warm-up. They were quickly into their stride from the throw in, goaling in the first minute and adding a further point after 5 minutes before Declan Traynor opened the home side account on seven minutes. Both sides traded further points in these opening stages - however a feature of this early period was sustained pressure from the Dreen men and a series of outstanding point blank saves from Niall Black. Drawing confidence from this it was on a rare breakout that after good chasing from Traynor that Declan Diamond side-footed to the net to bring the game level on 12minutes. The game settled down thereafter as both sides once again exchanged points, one feature of this period was an outstanding long range effort from Gerard O'Mullan, breaking forward and showing the men up front just how to do it. Half-time came with Glenravel two points in arrears, 1-7 to 1-5. Still it was a more confident Glenravel who ran off at the break, knowing that they had it within themselves to take the game to Rasharkin and advance to the next round. For the first twenty minutes of the second half Glenravel dominated the match everywhere but on the scoreboard. Conor McNeill and Joe Scullion swept up at the back and fed intelligent ball to forwards in space, midfield held sway, with Michael O'Mullan going through a trojan amount of work, but all to show on the scoreboard was a single Josh McKeown point, which was cancelled out by a single Rasharkin point on 19minutes. A series of free kicks sent skywards and wide with no return increased the tension as the game entered the melting point in the last ten minutes. Outstanding fielding by Gerard O'Mullan and David Higgins seemed to galvanise those around them - McKeown slotted a free in the 20th minute and seconds later the home support erupted as Declan Traynor slotted cooly to the back of the Rasharkin net - McCambrige, albeit visibly carrying an injury ignited to fire over and feed Traynor for a further major to leave it a six point game with six minutes to go. The surge continued towards the finished line, Jordan McNeill muscled his way through for a fine point and Josh McKeown rounded off the night with a well-struck free to leave Glenravel home by an 8pt margin. This was an outstanding team effort, everyone playing a part, with some fantastic football at times keeping the crowd very much enthused and entertained. There is more in the tank, with two weeks to the 1/4 final against Lamh Dearg, the club must get behind this group of players and give all the support required. lets put a big effort in lads over the next two weeks. Well Done!!

Second Half Sortie by Saints Wins the Semi

U16 ‘A’ Shield – Semi Final

St Brendan’s 3:11   Ruairi Ogs 2:06

A week after knocking St Endas out of the Shield in the Quarter Finals the Ruairi Ogs came to town to derail the St Brendans steam train and this they did in the first half. A low scoring affair in the first thirty minute period was in some part down to the ground conditions where some of the smaller boys were hard to find among the long grass. St Brendans registered the first score an acute angled shot from near the left hand sideline saw Conleth’s effort nipped inside the uprights with only 45 seconds of the game gone. By the third minute he had added a thirty yard placed ball point to the score board. Cushendall hit back with a point in the fifth minute to leave the minimum between the two sides. Four minutes later an Aidan Corbett free from some eighty yards out dropped short of the target, Eoin raced out gathered the ball and fired over his shoulder to raise the white flag. The Cushendall boys then struck a rich vain of form and between the twelfth and fifteenth minute a single green and three white flags were raised in their favour. St Brendans looked bemused and unsure of what to do at this stage but a 35 yard sideline cut from Conleth sailed over the Cushendall bar to reduce the lead to manageable three points. However just before halftime Ruairi Ogs were awarded a free and it was duly converted by Cormac McAllister. A number of great saves by Michael was the only reason Cushendall were not out of sight at halftime. HT St Brendans 0:04  Ruairi Ogs 1:05

Like in the last encounter between these two great rivals the second half belonged to St Brendans and within the first three minutes of the restart Conleth and Declan both netted to put the home team ahead, Cushendall’s response was immediate and in a blink of an eye a major was scored at the other end to restore Cushendall’s superiority, all be it by a single point. The Benny backs were now coming in to the game a lot more and with the speed and skill of Andy, Donn, Torr, Aidan, Ruairi and Peter all getting out in front of their markers the sliothar was not getting to the Ruairi Og forward line to cause Michael any serious problem. This allowed the forwards to be more adventurous and pass the ball about in order to make good scoring chances. Conleth chipped over a 65 before Eoin with his trademark style ‘over the shoulder’ fired over. A penetrating solo run by Conleth and a deft hand pass to Declan resulted in another point. Cushendall tried to revive their fortunes when a converted free was registered in the sixteenth minute of the second half but this was to be their last score of the evening. St Brendans pressed on and a marvellous point from Connor lowered the heads of the boys from the heart of the glens. Conleth slotted over a 65 in the twenty seventh minute and from the puc out Declan returned the sliothar back over young Colm McClafferty’s crossbar. Eoin had another good evening at top of the right and finished the point scoring while Declan did similar with goal scoring when in the twenty ninth minute he rounded off with a major from a ground stroke.

A great performance on the field by everyone and especially Pearce at midfield as it was a big ask of him to play in this position against Cushendall. The lads have to be totally focused - strong, hard and brave with no lip and this they were on the night and thanks to the Cushendall team who played a big part in the testing of our young men. These are the kind of matches we need to prove our ability to be focused when under pressure.

On a lighter note it was good to see an old face return to the squad, you are very welcome back Paddy now get down that road and start training.

Forwards On Fire

U16 League

St Brendans 4:14   St Endas 3:09

This was a match between the McMullan Cup finalists but with better weather. St Endas got out of the blocks quickly and in the first minute led by a point. Declan then replied on six minutes to level the game after Connor’s penetrating solo left Declan a chip in. In the next nineteen minutes St Enda’s would not register a score as St Brendans hit 1:05. Mathew’s barnstorming run ended in a 30 yard point. Eoin got on the score sheet when Aidan’s free dropped short and Eoin shot over his shoulder, Mathew fed Declan and he hit the three pointer and it looked as if St Brendans would win at a canter. However St Enda’s had a mini revival with two unanswered points in the twenty fifty and twenty sixth minutes before James put over from around fifty yards out, St Enda’s cancelled James score with one of their own and on the stroke of halftime Eoin ran in a goal to leave the HT Score:-  St Brendans 2:07  St Endas 0:04.
The second half was a more even contest and by the seventeenth minute both teams had scored three more points all Benny’s points coming from Conleth. Donal cancelled out a St Endas twentieth minute goal when he received the sliothar from Jordan and smartly slotted it pass the out rushing goalkeeper. Cormac Ross put over a free from thirty yards out but the response was instant from Declan (2), Eoin (2) and a maximum by Mathew finished the game as a contest. In injury time St Endas score 2:01 to complete the scoring in this match.

Shamrock Young Guns Blasted by Bigger Benny’s

U16 League

St Brendan’s 4:24   Shamrock’s 0:05

As part of the Cushendun Festival Week the young Loughgiel team arrived for what was to prove a very one sided event. The Shamrocks fielded this years U14 Feile Team with a few exceptions against the St Brendans U16 Team that won the North Antrim Feile in 2008. The size and strength of St Brendans overpowered the younger lads and with the forwards in top form the game slipped away from Loughgiel very early on. Forty second of the start Aidan Corbett fired over an eighty yard free closely followed by a point from play when Eoin Magee latched on to a long clearance from Andy McLarnon. Loughgiel responded with two frees from Conor Christie before St Brendans registered six unanswered points from the camans of Donal, Mathew, Conleth (2), Declan and Eoin. Loughgiel closed the gap to five points in the fifteenth minute and this would be their last score of the half as St Brendans were in top gear by this stage. Eoin fielded superbly before striking the sliothar between the uprights. A minute later Declan had the ball in the net with some fantastic interchanging between Eoin and Conleth leaving Declan the easiest of chances. James raised the white flag in the eighteenth minute a minute later Declan received a short pass from Donal and he put the ball past the Shamrock’s netkeeper. A major from Donal and points from Declan, Eoin and Conleth before halftime put the game beyond the Loughgiel’s young guns. HT Score:- St Brendans 3:13 Loughgiel 0:03. The second half saw the introduction of Daniel, Jordan and Pearce but the relentless pace continued in front of a large appreciative crowd. Points in the second half came from Declan (2), Conleth (3), Jordan, Connor, Donal, Eoin (2) and Ruairi with the solitary gaol being scored by Eoin when Declan hand passed overhead to Conleth and he fed Eoin to finish off the game. Loughgiel added to their tally with two frees from Conor Christie. FT St Brendans 4:24  Loughgiel 0:05

Team:- Michael McHugh, Andy McLarnon, Colm Nesson, Torr Kinney, Donn Whelan, Aidan Corbett, Peter Mulholland, Mathew McCartan, Ruairi Laverty, Connor McNeill, Declan Traynor, James Duffin, Eoin Magee, Conleth McNeill, Donal O’Hara, Pearce Bannon, Daniel McConvery, Jordan McNeill.
