The girls turned in a truly memorable performance on Saturday evening in Fr Maginn Park – and there is little doubt that if we had been at full-strength that we would have progressed to the semi-finals. As it stands this team has the ability to go all the way in the Shield.
All over the field players gave 100%, with quite a number having their best ever performances for the club, moving the ball swiftly and skilfully up the pitch. It is unfair to single out individuals for special mention as I am proud of every one of you.
We had to start with 14 players and were 1-3 to 0-1 down by the time Oonagh made it in from work. Joanne hit 1-1 from frees to narrow the gap to 2 points at the break.
On the re-start, Caoimhe placed Danielle O’Hagan for a super goal – but we lost Shannon Kerr soon after. Despite the setback, we upped the tempo and were unlucky on a number of occasions. Gortnamona regained the lead with three points.
Emma then scored her first point for Brídíní Óga, but we then conceded a rather soft goal. However the girls responded immediately with a great move that saw Caoimhe hauled down for a penalty. She blasted to the top corner and the game was in the melting pot. But try as we did, we simply could not get the next score and Gortnamona fired over a late free to secure victory.
Girls – our best ever performances individually and as a team. Maith sibh!
