Thursday, June 11, 2009 Glenravel 3-13 vs Aldergrove 1-04 The Glenravel Minor Footballers recorded a fine victory over Aldergrove last Tuesday Evening at Fr Maginn Park. This was a very good performance from our team as they gained revenge over the side that had beaten them earlier in the season. Right from the off we dominated things. Gerard & David in midfield ruled the roost. They never soloed, they chased back & more importantly they played first time ball into the forwards. Our backs must have listened to the coaches instructions because they were either in front of their men for the ball or tight behind them when they couldn’t get it. Aidie is looking more natural in every game, Ronan is starting to position himself well in the full back role & Jamie is beginning to know the importance of catching the ball. Our forwards ran the visitors defence ragged. Josh is the playmaker & every time he received the ball he always had an option to kick to. Caolan, Deckie & Weed always made themselves available. When the nitty gritty started Sledger controlled proceedings & his strong runs & kicks certainly make an added bonus for the team. Paudie played very unselfishly at full forward when in several cases he played the ball off to the better placed man instead of shooting for points. Pick of the scores in the 1st half were Deckie’s goal in which he lobbed the goalie with a delicate kick facing away from the goal, Caolan’s 2 points from play where he soloed past the defenders before slotting over the bar. The score at half time was 1-06 to 0-03 in our favour. The 2nd half saw Aldergrove completely swamped in all departments. The half back line of Danny, Tiernan & Michael out caught, outran & outplayed their markers thus ensuring our lads never leaving the Aldergrove half. Shay came on for an injured Jamie & tightened the backs even more, thus giving the coaches more headaches for the next game. An out on his feet Sledger was finally coaxed off for Eoin who quickly showed that he can play a bit when he scored 1-03 in a row. Aaron (always glad to see him) made his comeback by taking Caolan’s place in the forwards & unbelievably scored a goal on his first touch. Again there were some excellent scores by Glenravel. Deckie nonchantly kicked over 3 point from tight angles. Eoin slotted over a point after quick build up play between Paudie, Josh & David. Even Danny came close to scoring once but the ball was cut out before it reached him. The final score line read Glenravel 3-13 Aldergrove 1-04. This was a good night for the whole Minor set up as a whole. Aldergrove had put a much weakened Glenravel team to the sword up in Crumlin earlier on in the year & they arrived confidently hoping to do the same again. The coaches (Malachy, PJ & Garreth) have always believed that if they could get the full panel of players out with the help of the U16s then this could be a good team. There are still many games to come so it is up to the players to keep this going. If all the players who turned up for this game can turn up for the next game then that is a good start to start from.
