Glenavy 2-7 Glenravel 5-15
Glenravel followed on in fine style on Thursday evening from last week's outing as they put the opposition quickly to the sword and had the game sewn up by half time. This writer was getting fed up penning hard luck stories on a Thursday night, so a blistering opening 30 minutes brought some satisfaction to him as well as to the small band of travelling supporters. The middle third were well on top, backs were efficient and the opportunities were well worked and points sailed over with monotous regularity, so that by the 17th minute the score sat at a healthy 0-10 to 0-1. It got better when Declan Traynor dispossessed the keeper on 23 minutes and fired to the net, and Caolan McCambridge added a further major three minutes later, leaving the score at the break 2-11 to 0-2. Half time came too soon, as Glenavy had niggled themselves back into the contest, and concentration levels seemed to drop, still a 15 point margin was a healthy lead.
The game resumed, however the earlier fluency seemed to be no longer there; nevertheless three further goals, two from Traynor and a Gordon Dillon effort had put a whopping 23 points between the sides by the 45th minute. A notable feature of this was a fine catch and 50yd carry by Mark O'Connor, setting up the Dillon goal. So far ahead, the points secure it was understandable that the foot was taken off the pedal. However all shape and sense seemed to be lost as Glenavy added 2-2 in the closing minutes to leave the margin of victory 17 points. Forgetting the last 15 minutes, this was an excellent all round team performance, some outstanding scores and combination plays. That said there is always room for improvement!!!
